Making Basic Patterns in Pixelmator

Textures and patterns are becoming more and more popular in web design today. It gives websites an almost physical characteristic that is lacking in solid colors. Real life is full of texture and different surfaces, why not make it part of the web too? Since websites are fluid and dynamic forms of design, it's almost essential to have a good pattern for any sort of repeating texture. I find that the best patterns are simply black and white pixels that can be played with in photoshop and applied to any layer. I'll show you one method I've been using a lot recently using Pixelmator

Photoshop Shadow Effect

I first came across this effect by John Hicks on hicksdesign. It involves a shadow that slowly shrinks down into the background behind it. The end result looks somewhat like a tab, or slab of paper that is cut out of the paper and lifted up a bit. It's really a cool effect, and it establishes a nice rounded border for an element through the use of a shadow rather than an actual border line. This tutorial will show how I go about doing this effect, it mostly involves making an adjustment to the shadow of a rounded box. I must admit, this is my latest craze. I love this technique.
